Substance Of The Hope For explores faith within the Black community. A community uprooted by slavery and forced into North America, forced to abandon their cultures, languages, rituals and forced to adopt the beliefs, customs, even the names of their new lord. But the result, captured in this multimedia as part of a larger project, is far from the Christian experience imported from the old world and forced onto the new. After centuries of assimilation, intermingling, segregation and emancipation, a deep spiritualistic blend of the forbidden and the sanctioned is revealed. Prayer and song, rhythm and voodooism give way to a frenzied rapturous practice.
